The Incredibles

Every own film history has its own film arts. It might be different when due to different kind of generation era. So films that are produced within a particular period or nation might share a significant traits of style and form. Feminism theory is the relationship between men and women has almost always been unequal and oppressive. The feminist movement fights for equal rights and opportunities for women. There are many different kinds of feminism and feminists themselves tend to disagree about the ways in which women are disadvantaged and what exactly should be done to get equal rights.

There are few history that how female fight for their equal right from the past. The First Wave is among 19th century and early 20th century. UK & US won improved rights for women in marriage and property. Its biggest achievement was winning some political power. In the UK the Suffragettes and Suffragists campaigned for the women’s vote. In 1918, women over thirty who owned property won the vote and in 1928 it was extended to all women over twenty-one. Secondly, the Second Wave is around 1960s & 1970s. It extended the fight beyond political rights to education, work and the home. Thirdly, the Third Wave is from 1990 till nowadays generation, some argue that seeing the history of feminism in just these three waves can ignore the fight for equal rights but for the fact that women are still unequal, by getting women to accept their unequal position in society.

In early Hollywood, women were always represented as an ideal wife who cooks, clean, raises well behaved towards her children, and please her husband. Women also represented with a neat appearance and pretty look at during those old time societies. There are few types of archetype that people define female as strong female, femme fatale, good wife, blondes, brunettes and etc. Some of it defined oppression, stereotype, objectification and patriarchy. Oppression is you can’t do anything even you don’t like it, when people think she is like this, she is being oppress by the people who think she is like that. Stereotype is means prejudice and generalization people by the male towards female. Objectification is how people place women as an object, normally from the television people place women as an sexual intonation. Next is patriarchy means last time generation, people will just follow what their father said, as father is the powerful person in a family at those old time generation. But for nowadays. women are influenced by the Feminist Movement that dates back in America and Europe since 1960s.

The Incredible is one the animation film that launched by Pixar Company that talking about the married superheroes, Incredible and Elastic girl. All the superheroes are forced to assume mundane lives as Bob and Helen Parr after the super-powered activities had been banned by the government. After they had been banned, Elastigirl seemed to be a feminist, on taking care her children and her husband, Mr Incredible. Life had other plans for her, however Elastigirl then changed her feminist  to a more traditionalist and becoming a housewife and devoting her effort to being a good wife and mother. But Mr Incredible still wish to help the world as he has the superpower that others do not have. He still keep on finding chance to get battle with those bad who trying to spoil the city. One day, he gets a chance to summon to an island to battle with those out-of-control robot but Mr. Incredible is in trouble, it is a trap that did by a bad guy and end up his family try to save him. In this movie, they had created a new image of women and how should they be portrayed in today's society.

In conclusion, we as a female, we should stand out as a strong type of female. Last but not least, we should not let people look down on female even though in the society nowadays people still look down on female that female still can't do something that male did.

Easy A

Every own film history has its own film arts. It might be different when due to different kind of generation era. Easy A is about high school student Olive, she is a nice girl who studies hard, gets good grades, has a witty personality but cannot seem really get noticed by her peers in school and Olive had no choice and had to lie to her best friend, Rhiannon. When Rhiannon assumes that Oliver lost her virginity to a college guy which Oliver made up, the rumor spreads very fast about Oliver losing her virginity. Through all this the rumors at her school, it changes her social status and reputation through many white lies and changes in her personality and attitude. Her life soon starts paralleling that of Hester Prynne's in the novel the Scarlet Letter, which she is currently studying in English class.

In the movie, "Easy A", there are few people that portray out the female representation. - Olive is the main representation as she is smart that she do not lost her virginity towards anyone even though there are rumours that spread out and said she sex with many different kind of guys. She is independent, she solved every problem that she faced in her life even though people use to call her slut. But actually she is kind and sympathetic, she just want to help those guys who needed her help. Olive is not a stereotypical female as she prefers to be her own self and do not conform herself to the societies expectations. This movie shown that female was easily stereotypes by others based on rumors spread. People assume that she had slept with those people who deal with her using money and therefore people look down on her.

Besides that, her best friends, Rhiannon and other girls think that she is horrible for doing this of deal and judge her behavior as a slut. But Olive does not conform to what people expect on how to behave as a girl instead of standing out and embrace her reputation. Moreover, she is not afraid on how people judge on her and she dare to fight back towards those people who look down on her. In addition, Olive's family do not have the dominant patriarchal system despite the fact that her dad plays a prominent role. Her parents is quite open minded and whatever topic they can discuss among the family members.

In conclusion, we as a female, we should stand out as a strong type of female. Last but not least, we should not let people look down on female even though in the society nowadays people still look down on female that female still can't do something that male did.

The Bicycle Thief

Every own film history has its own film arts. It might be different when due to different kind of generation era. So films that are produced within a particular period or nation might share a significant traits of style and form. There are many types of film arts, for example, early cinema, the development of the classical hollywood cinema, German expressionism, french impressionism, Italian Neorealism and etc. Italian neorealism is originated after the world war II, it devastated the national cinemas tremendously and affecting the economic stability of the cinemas industries. Now we look at the film that included the terms of Italian Neorealism. The first film that considered as Italian Neorealism is Rome, Open City. But the film that we discussed is "The Bicycle Thief" which is related to neorealism too. Italian Neorealism came after World War II ended and the Italian government fell, causing the Italian film industry to lose its center. Neorealism was a sign of cultural change and social change in Italy. Its films presented contemporary stories and ideas, and were often shot in the streets because the place for them to shoot had been damaged significantly during the war.

Neorealism  can be seen as an improvement on classic realism. Neorealism conveys an aspects of relations as the deepest cause of power struggles where the filmmakers had created the central force conflict in the film among the characters, rather than merely a permissive one as realism. Neorealism distinguish itself from that classic realism by rejecting finding famous and professional actor. The filmmaker in neorealism preferred actor that are not professional to show how the realistic life that face and live by the normal people in the life. It enhance the narrative storytelling using mise-en-shot and mise-en-scene. After the World War II devastated the national cinemas, it affect the economic stability of the cinema industries. In neorealism, normally the mise-en-shot is long takes. Long takes means use one long shot to show how it the long takes make it more realistic. In neorealism, the filmmakers use real people and locations to so directly and make a relation to established with the contemporary social reality.

The synopsis of "The Bicycle Thief" is talking about a guy named as Antonio Ricci, an ordinary man who has been unemployed for quite a long time and he receives a job putting up posters throughout the city but the terms and conditions is that he needs to has his own bicycle in order to get the job from the leader who assign job. So he ran back to his home and tel his wife about he getting a new job but he got to has his own bicycle. His wife then sells her dowry linens so that his husband, Antonio Ricci able to get a bicycle from the shop and start works as labor who putting up the posters throughout the city. During his first day on the job, while he is climb on the stairs and starts working, the bicycle is stolen by someone. So he starts chasing the thief but he can't get to snatch him. In the mid and the ending of the drama is keep on talking about how adventurous he find the bicycle thief together with his son,Bruno and he feel hopeless.

Most neorealism films are generally filmed with nonprofessional actors. One of the features of showing The Bicycle Thief is an Italian Neorealism is because its use of non-professional actors. As what I study online, Lamberto Maggiorani, who plays Antonio Ricci was originally a factory worker. Lianella Carell, who plays Ricci's wife, was originally a journalist whom the filmmakers met when she asked him for an interview. For the son, Bruno who plays by Enzo Staiola was found during watching the shoot. In keeping with the use of ‘real people’, their conversation of everyday is conversational speech rather than literary dialogue was used. Neorealism films often feature children in major roles, though their characters are frequently real as they do not know anything just be like their own self in their childhood time. Children also feature prominently in Neorealism films, due to the innocent, untainted object on what they see in neorealism films. In this films there are only one the of the professional actor on it whom is the one who assign job to the people who surrounded on him and also the one who starts to have conversation between Antonio Ricci and him.

They are shot almost on location, mostly in run-down cities as well as rural areas due to its forming during the post-war era, no longer being constrained to a studio sets location and is also due to the topic idea of what it is the real life that live among the poor and the lower working class. The focus is on a simple social class of people who live in rural, poor and suffer in everyday life. In the bicycle thief, all of the locations that been using are more on post war locations and also old buildings and new buildings together as the city slowly recover after the World War II. When Antonio Ricci back home to tell his wife that he might get a job if he has a bicycle, the on set locations is full of collapsed road and buildings and and also have lots of factories. The people during that time are socially conscious on humanistic as people just don’t care about it, people just scare about society as we can seen in "The Bicycle Thief" films. Besides that, it possesses a melodramatic aspects, some kind of emo styles while he is depress on finding his bicycle.

In conclusion, Italian Neorealism provides us an example of Realist life filmmaking that made by the old times to show how they live in the old era generation. Its mainly focus on the everyday struggles and suffer by the poor, working class people in difficult socio-political conditions.  To conclude all together as neorealism it employs a well developed mise-en-scene to achieve the objective reality of the films to emphasise how filmmakers can manipulate the reality.  In terms of narrative, Neorealism differs from Hollywood films as they more focusing on character, and plot to develop organically. Last but not least, Italian Neorealism has had an enormous impact on motivated people to rebuilt their own national reputation and the development of film which continues till today

The Maltese Falcon

Film Noir

What makes us to have the interest to watch a movie normally? Before we watch a movie, we will go through some of the details parts of the movie. For instance, we will go through the genre, synopsis and others details parts on itself that make us to watch it. There are diverse kind of movies and they targeted different kind of target audience based on what their needs and what their expectation on the movie itself. Besides that, we also look at some terms on it for example film noir. To further understand the film noir, the best film to show it is the movie "The Maltese Falcon".

Film noir is a term coined bu French film critics in 1946. Film noir is style of filmmaking characterized by elements such as cynical heroes, stark lighting effects, frequent use of flashbacks, intricate plots, and an underlying existentialist philosophy. The genre was prevalent mostly in American crime dramas of the post-World War II era. Film noir is a type of American thriller film, normally is more about investigation cases in film. Before film noir, character in storyline is pure good, bad, or emo before thid. But in film noir, all characters are bad, no pure good people in this world.Film noir is a style of cinematography that emphasizes the impression of night-time photography with high contrast lighting, and occasional low key lighting. It creates deep shadows and oblique angles to create a sense of anxiety. It features a world of criminals of darkness and shadows to enhance the story and characters.

The synopsis of "The Maltese Falcon" is about two detectives, Sam Spade and Miles Archer that are hired by Miss Wonderly  to follow a man. Spade and Archer take the assignment because she offers them good money, but Spade suspects she may be up to no good. When Spade receives a phone call telling him that Archer is dead twp police officers visit hi and inquire about his recent whereabouts, and say that Thursby was also killed and that Spade is a suspect. They have no evidence against Spade, but tell him that they will be conducting an investigation into the matter. Later, Spade visited by Joel Cairo, who offers Spade $5,000 if he can retrieve a figurine of a black falcon that has recently arrived in San Francisco. He later receives a call from Casper Gutman, who wishes to meet him. Gutman says he will pay handsomely for the black bird.

In the "Maltese Falcon", the filmmakers used low key lighting Film noir means that the shadows and night cinematography are the characteristics on it. For example, Sam Spade doesn't exactly keep banker's hours, the director of photography use many night scenes to bring out the foggy San Francisco scene and the shadow and darkness of crime. In addition, film noir camera angles is distinctive camera angles to make the tension and mood higher in a movie. Such as the scene where Spade visits Gutman's hotel room, the director and dop uses a low angle shot to emphasize both of them.

Other than that, film noir is about the power relations and sexual identity. The power of femme fatale exerts over the hero is his own doing, because he has over-invested in his construction of her sexuality at the expense of his own subjectivity (Hayward.S, 2006).  The femme fatale character of Brigid O’Shaughnessy in this story. O’Shaughnessy’s unrelenting lies and wicked mind earned her an image of dangerous lady capable of overthrowing a man of power. The adaptation of American literary works is one of the telling characteristics of film noir in the 1940s with most of the stories released in the succeeding years under this genre were based on best-selling detective novels, pulp fiction. In The Maltese Falcon, Huston managed to relate the story to the experiences of the audience, appeal to their emotion, and ultimately appeal to reason with the timely release of his film, when the norms of the society seemed sympathetic to this storyline.

Last but not least, it is a great black and white film that full of mysterious but it might not get the interest by everyone.

In the Mood of Love

French Impressionism

What makes us to have the interest to watch a movie normally? Before we watch a movie, we will go through some of the details parts of the movie. For instance, we will go through the genre, synopsis and others details parts on itself that make us to watch it. There are diverse kind of movies and they targeted different kind of target audience based on what their needs and what their expectation on the movie itself. Besides that, we also look at some terms on it for example the French expressionism. To further understand the influence of French Expressionism on contemporary media, we will look in the movie named as "In the Mood of Love". Now we will look at the avant-garde style and the movement of the film itself.

French impressionism is generally considered to be a spontaneous method of painting in which an artist attempts to capture the impression of light in a scene. French Impressionist Cinema, also sometimes known as The First Avant-Garde or Narrative Avant-Garde, is a name for a loose association of French films and filmmakers operating primarily between 1919 and 1929. Although different scholars have reached different conclusions as to whether French Impressionist Cinema can even be classified as a cohesive movement, it is generally considered to be one of the important branches of early international cinema and its influence today is widespread.

The synopsis of "In the Mood of Love" is talking about a journalist and his wife move into an apartment, but his's spouse is often away on business. He makes the acquaintance of the alluring with the protagonist, {Maggie Cheung}, whose own significant other also seems preoccupied with work. Afterwards they two realize their husband and wife are cheating on them, they begin to fall for one another but however, they do not want to same as their spouses who unfaithful towards their partners so they just remain as friends even though they fall in love with each other. Actually this movie is quite sad.

French impressionism was an avant-garde style that operated in the film industry. The cinematography of the movie give audience a sense of voyeurism, I feel like I am want to know more on the two characters as they develop their secret relationship and spy on them. This sense of voyeurism into the character’s life is due to the film’s plot which hiding a secretive affair among them. Voyeurism is found in the movie by the framing and the positioning of the camera and also the camera’s eye-level tracking shots of the characters’ backside.

In addition, the camera is positioned behind a grilled window, portraying the sense that the audience is peeking in during a very intimate exchange between the two characters. However, this type of framing can also be interpreted in such a way that the characters are trapped and confined in the secrecy of their affair. Besides that, there are many scenes of the main character in which the camera follows them from behind with an eye-level tracking shot. They use this kind of shot to make me feel like the director want us to follow them within a distance to watch their movement and make us feel wonder what's happening at the middle and the ending of the story. This had created a sense of voyeurism. Much of the film was shot using the normal lens as it “seeks to avoid noticeable perspective distortions” (Bordwell and Thompson 169), giving the audience the feeling of “being there” with the protagonists.

The background music plays an important role in telling the story begins and how the story will happen in the movie of "In the Mood of Love". I like the part where the background music where the female character walks down the street to buy noodles and it keep on play repeatedly. It show a sense of sadness mood and where she met the male character at there too and they keep on passed by without any dialogue while they saw each other. Besides that, the editing for this movie is more slow pace to show the sense of feeling that what the story will slowly begin on and this movie is really good. I like it so much.

Dark City

German Expressionism

What makes us to have the interest to watch a movie normally? Before we watch a movie, we will go through some of the details parts of the movie. For instance, we will go through the genre, synopsis and others details parts on itself that make us to watch it. There are diverse kind of movies and they targeted different kind of target audience based on what their needs and what their expectation on the movie itself. Besides that, we also look at some terms on it for example the German expressionism. To further understand the influence of German Expressionism on contemporary media, we will look in the movie named as "Dark City". Now we will look at the thematic and stylistic elements adapted from the film movement in modern sci-fi film Dark City (1998) by Alex Proyas.

German Expressionism was an artistic movement that started before World War I in Germany with Expressionist cinema. It was an influential genre that shown us that cinema can be an art form, and it is not just for entertainment purposes. Expressionism tends to be characterized by showing the subconscious feelings of the characters and making them the surface of the work. The audience will be shown not what is strictly, naturally real but an abstract view of what the characters feel is real. Such art is generally portrayed as fairly dark.

Expressionism was actually part of the director's attempts to emphasize the subjective perspective and try and portray psychological complexity within the limits of the silent film medium. As camera techniques improved and actors developed a way of acting for silent films, directors gradually pushed to greater realism in the 1920s. Modern art and modern film is heavily influenced by German Expressionism. For example: films like Dark City.(Edward Scissorhands)

Dark City are about films are about false worlds created to fabricate ideal societies, and in both the machinery of the rulers is destroyed by the hearts of the ruled. Dark City is set in a surrealistic also is typical of a German Expressionist setting. There is a world underneath the world where the Strangers established machinery for their experiments unknown to the humans. The city comes with no daytime and changes its landscape. In fact, no other places exist outside of the city and the city itself is connected to the outer space.Distortion of reality can be observed in the shape-shifting of the buildings and interiors when the tuning commences. he make the world in Dark City in a mysterious way and enhance the feelings of unpredictability and insecurity in the film.

The distortion and wicked psychological state are further suggested by the gothic and dark appearance of the Strangers. The Strangers are pale, bald, wear only black colour clothing and have stiff, rigid and constricted movements. They have little movements in putting humans to sleep. As what the strangers are wearing, it reinforces the fact that they are some kind of weird natural beings compared to human with their dark appearances to identify that they are evil and bad.

German expressionism film is more focusing on mise-en scene. The lighting that are being use in ‘Dark City’ is low key lighting. From the beginning of the scene, John awake from the bath tub, the lamps is swinging in the air and we can see that they are shadow there to bring out the mystery and horror feel on it. Besides that, there’s also low-key lighting. With the addition of John’s reaction in panic, creates scary feels to the audience. In the movie "Dark City"most probably is shoot in low-key lighting and they all are in night scene.

In the conclusion, Dark City is a best movies that included what had mentioned above.

There are many genre that found in the movie. Genre have different kind of characteristic that known and recognized by the audience while watching on a certain movie. Semantic approach is a conventions genre that communicate to the audience in ways of characters, locations, props, music, and angle of shooting. Characters means actors that act out the whole film and there are many character roles to play as in a film. At last, he get to find the grave and solve the curse from the witch to rescue the people in the town.

Now I want to discuss about the theory that related to the genre in this movie. There are few genre that we can found in this movie. Firstly is comedy. There are many of the laughing part in the movie. Besides that, it is an animation genre that is a cartoon that make by different kind of images and motion graphics. It different compare to the others movie, because movie normally shoot by a production but this kind of cartoon is made through using 3D graphics design on it.

The third genre that we can get in this movie is horror, there are some horror part in the movie to scare the audience and make them a lesson. For example, the horror part that can be found while the zombie walk towards Norman them and the witch horror the people in the city. The fourth one can be found is action genre on how the Norman fight with the witch in the last part of the movie, Norman fight with the witch to protect the people in the town. The last genre that can be found is melodrama. Melodrama means the emotional and overdramatic that can be found in the movie. For some part, is too over reacted by the people in the town and Norman to make audiences feel too sensational towards the movie. There are still have many genres that we can be found on it beside of this few genre. For instance, fantasy, thriller, and family film can be found in the movie too.

The mise-en-scene of this movie is didn’t much special compare towards those real movie film. The camera angle in this movie is adjust through the software depends on the creator of this movie. The composition and the camera angle all is adjusted by the software through online editing. But there are still many mise-en-scene that can be found in the movie. Mise-en-scene enclose and contributes a lot in the film. Mise-en-scene includes many different field of things, for example the setting, lighting, costumes, space, staging and acting. Setting creates a sense of place and mood to reflect the character’s emotional state of mind. In the part, the setting for the library during night actually creates a cold feel and scarcer feel in the movie. Lighting included three-point lighting, high key lighting and low key lighting to create an illumination of the scene in the film. Besides that, costume is the most aspect in the mise-en-scene part. Costume include both makeup wardrobe to conduct a character’s personality and status on the movie itself. Other than that, the space of the movie too. There are many types of spaces that use in a movie. For instance, there are deep space, shallow space, off-screen space and frontality.

Conclusion

In a conclusion, Paranorman is a 3D motion graphics movie. It is a funny and horror genre movie that makes people laugh on it. Besides, it is a good movie to teach us some lesson on it. We can few lesson on the movie itself that brought by the character.
